Year 5 Science- Term 3- Physical Sciences ‘Light Shows’
Discuss • What roles does ‘light’ play in our lives? • What examples of uses can you think of? • What would happen if there was no light?
Light in our lives • What would our lives be without light? We need it to see everything we do in every moment of the day. We rely on light to read a book, cross the street, admire artwork, watch the sunset and look into faces.
Light and technology • Do you know the role light plays in technology? • It enables us to play music from a CD or record movies. High-speed optical cable is used in our communications. Lasers are employed in cutting-edge surgery and defence.
Properties of light and definitions • Light Rays- light travels in rays and wavelengths (like soundwaves make you hear) and these rays can be affected in several ways • Light reflection- What you see when you look at objects that appear to emit ‘light’ but don’t (i.e- walls or windows) • Light refraction-As light passes from one medium to another, it changes speed, and bends. This is is called light refraction • Light absorption-when an object ‘absorbs’ the rays of light that can be seen and affect its path or visibility
The electromagnetic spectrum • Cut and paste the diagram into your notes and write the following underneath • The electromagnetic spectrum describes the various types of electromagnetic radiation based on their wavelengths. Radio wavelength is at one end of the spectrum. Gamma ray radiation (nuclear) is at the other end. The ‘visible’ light is around the middle of the spectrum.
