Partner presentations • Many success stories can be found • OARI and ARARI mention mainly in situ water conservation • ERHA mainly water harvesting structures • For each project run, there are surveys done, some of them have impact analysis • Partners have a lot of information and data beyond the 3 pilote sites of N3 • Some of the water management practices are not mentionned (river diversion, wells, water lifting technolgogies) because it is beyond the mandate of the research centers (but belongs to the ministry of water)
Definition of “rainwater management strategy” Group 1 Any interventions that increase the water productivity and water availibility within the watershed. Group 2 : Efficient and effective management and utilization for a targeted purpose, agriculture, livestock, domestic supply and/or environment, with minimal damage (below economic threshold level) to the land nor to the resource.
Classification of practices • Group1: • Based on who takes the decision : farm household, the farmer community, the government • Group 2 : • Physical: • In situ: no water storage • crop rotation, mulching, crop residue, terrassing, contour farming, runoff irrigation, dry planting, trench, eyebrow basin, halfmoon, tie ridging, zie pit, percolation pit, drainage system(ditches, cut off drain, BBF, Ridge & Farrow) • Ex situ : water storage structure • farm pond, diversion, roof water harvesting, microdams, wells • Biological: • crop varieties and types, afforestation, multi-purpose tree planting • Technological: • water lifting devices, spring protection, BBM
Open “discussion board” • How should the research center be organised to contribute to the different NBDC projects? • How should the GIS training look like? • How are we going to access and share data from the different partners? • How is the N3 project going to be implemented?
Prioritizing • What are the top 5 most implemented practices in the areas you work? What 5 potentially have the highest impact on farmer’s livelihoods? • What are the successes and contraints to adoption of these? • Where do these practices work best? What are the bio-physical characteristic that matter? • Who are the actors who need to be involved for adoption an practice? • What are the socio-economic and institutional conditions needed?
