Well Known Projects • Most towns in America had a structure built by the WPA • The Griffith Observatory, and the Timberline Lodge were built by the WPA
Civilian Conservation Corps • CCC • Provides unskilled manual labor jobs to men 18-25 related to conservation • Gave men a job, food, and housing • 30 dollars a month • Most popular of the “New Deal” programs • ended in 1942
Qualification • Men were chosen from local families receiving aid • Only one person from the family could be in the program • Also included veterans, Indians, and African Americans
Type of Jobs • Structural Improvements: bridges, service buildings • Transportation: truck trails, minor roads, and air fields • Erosion Control : check dams, and terracing /riprapping • Flood Control: irrigation, drainage, dams, ditching • Forest Culture: planting trees and shrubs, timber stand improvement, seed collection, nursery work • Forest Protection: fire prevention, fire fighting • Landscape and Recreation: campground construction • Range: stock driveways, elimination of predatory animals • Wildlife: stream improvement, fish stocking • Miscellaneous: emergency work, surveys
Significance of the WPA and the CCC programs • Decreased unemployment rates in the US • Gave many men along with women steady jobs • Improved the living conditions because of their work • Helped America through the depression
