Remarkable personalities who had contributed a lot in the Origin and development of the studies in Microbiology and Medical Microbiology
Louis Pasteur(1822-1895) • developed the methods of sterilization and pasteurization. • observed the different microbes in different fermentations. [Yeast cells in alcohol fermentation, Lactobacillus in lactic fermentation] • Developed the vaccines [for Cholera in Chicken, Anthrax in sheep and Rabies in Man] • Developed the methods for growth of bacteria and yeasts in cultures. • Proposed the Germ theory of diseases. • Found the Pasteur institute in Paris.
Joseph Lister(1827-1912) • Contributed the technique of `pure culture` of bacteria. • Discovered the system for `anti-septic` surgery. • Given the principle of preventative medicine with the opening of the Institute of Preventative Medicine in 1891 • Served as a President of the Royal Society from 1895 to 1900
Robert Koch(1843-1910) • Contributed the techniques of staining, visualizing and growing bacteria. • Solidified the liquid culture media with agar. • Isolated and demonstrated the role of bacteria for Tuberculosis and Anthrax. • Discovered the `specific toxins` made by the causative bacteria for diphtheria and tetanus. • Leads to immunization therapy.
MICROBIOLOGY • Microbiology is a branch of science that deals with microbes, the microscopic forms of life. • Microbes are invisible creatures, too small to be seen with the naked eye. ] • They can be seen only by magnifying their image with a microscope. • They include viruses, bacteria, algae, fungi and protozoa. • Microbiology deals with the forms , structure , reproduction, physiology, metabolism and classification of microorganisms.
