WHO IS A LEADER? • A person who has been given responsibility by a group which s/he is a member and has ability to lead them to attain the set goals. • ROLE OF A LEADER • Listen to others aiming at achieving goals. 1. Acknowledge your predecessors • Accepting others accomplishment / achievement – ‘Not your effort alone’. Some have been doing it again laying the foundation. Cf John 4:36-38 I sent you to reap what you did not work for others had worked hard and you have reaped the benefits of their labour. 2. Leader as servants / not masters1 Cor. 9:19-23 • Become slaves to serve • Became a Jew to win them to Christ. Cf Mark 10:43 Mathew 7:16 • You can tell what they are by what they do. 2 Cor. 4:5 • We do not preach ourselves – But Christ we are servants • Paul did a lot of work – starting churches - but never became the master – he did not claim any rights. 3. Leader as Steward Luke 12: 42-43 • In New Testament – steward were employed to supervise servants and manage home affairs. • Commanded respect and trust. • Leader (Christian) are expected to plan and organize things for God’s people. • God has given leaders responsibility – to feed his people properly (1 cor. 9:16-18) when I peach I can’t boast, for I am compelled to preach. • Stewards are transmistors of apostolic faith – 2 Tim 2:2 and Guardians of Faith 2 Timothy 1:14. 4. A LEADER AS A SHEPHERED: John 10: 1 ff • Good shepherd knows their sheep • Always with the flock Mathew 28:20. Always with you to the end of time. • Leader need to be visionary – always leading to green pastures cf Psalms 23:2 • You are expected to execute God’s purpose. Is 44:28 • The scripture stress the serious responsibility of human leaders to those who follow them. Jer. 23:1-4 and 25:32-38 “who to those who scatter and destroy these sheep ……. 5. Courage for leadership battle: Joshua 1:6:9 Duet 31:6-7 • Be courageous and strong – lead them to inherit the land • Courage to speak the truth in love. • Stand firm without compromising (Mk 11:15 ff – Jesus drived out people from the temple) • Leaders should courageously give direction. 6. Gentleness • Being gently is not be weak • 3 qualities • Kindness / consideration – consider the feeling of others – could not belittle others or intentionally hurt. • Submission – to the will to God – Christ submitted to the will of the father. Mk 14:36 take this from me – yet not what I will – but what you will. • Gentleness is teachable & correctable • Never stop learning / way open to new understanding • Treat others as people not objects. True leaders give generously – without demanding reward. Cf John 6:1-14 – (5000, fed) only miracle in 4 Gospels. • Jesus – provided what people couldn’t do – Food’s John 9 Provides sight – John 2 weeding “wine”. • Generous people: encourage; want others to succeed. • Success without a successor is a failure – if Jesus left without disciple being left – good news couldn’t spread. • Leaders does not only give – money or materials but also time, attention, experience. • This leads to better staff and better Human Relationship BY REV. 8. TRUTHFULLNESS & CONFIDENTIAL • Everyone would like to be told the truth. • John 1:17 – Grace and Truth came through Jesus: 14:6 I am the way and truth and the life. • Jesus stood for truth. FORGIVENESS • Acts 7:60 – Stephen forgave in hails of stone. • As a leader you must learn to forgive – this makes the going easy. • Col. 3:13 - Forgiveness as the Lord forgive you: Lord’s prayers Luke 11:1-4 - John 3:15-17 – why forgive – love - How to forgive – through Christ • John 8:1-11 -Women caught in Adultery – God forgiveness in Action. - Effective leaders are forgiving leaders. 10. PRINCIPLES OF MULTPLYING MINISTRY • A good leader knows how to delegate (Team Work) Exodus 18:13-22 • As a leader you have to overcome CLERICALISM. This is where a leader is trying do the work God has called you to accomplish by yourself without the counsel of help of others. • Clericalism is placing yourself over others instead of seeing yourself as the servant of others. (Mathew 20:27-23:11) • To overcome this you have to use the principle of multiplying ministry – used by Jesus and Apostles. • Let the team help you with the work God has called you to do. BY REV.
