Present Progressive • We use the present tense to talk about an action that always or often takes place or that is happening now.
Present Progressive • Ellos comen ensaladas. • They eat salads. • They are eating salads.
Present Progressive • We use the present progressive tense when we want to emphasize that something is happening right now.
Present Progressive • Ellos están comiendo ensaladas. • They are eating salads. (right now)
Present Progressive están comiendo Present tense form of “estar” Present participle
Present Progressive comiendo -er present participle ending Stem of comer
Present Progressive • To make the present participle, • Use the endings: • iendo for -er / -ir verbs • ando for -ar verbs
Present Progressive • Let’s do an -AR verb in the present progressive.

Present Progressive • Some verbs have a stem change (o > u) or (e > i) in the present participle form.
DORMIR • Present Participle…..durmiendo
DORMIR • Juan todavía está durmiendo.
SERVIR • Present Progressive…..sirviendo
SERVIR • El camarero está sirviendo la comida.
Present Progressive: Irregular Forms • In the following -er verbs, the i of -iendo changes to y. • creer: creyendo • leer: leyendo • traer: trayendo
Present Progressive • Reflexive or object pronouns can be placed before the form of estar, or they can be attached to the end of the present participle.
Present Progressive • Ahora me estoy divirtiendo. • Now I am having fun. • Lo está haciendo ahora. • He/she is doing it now.
Present Progressive • If they are attached to the present participle, a written accent is needed.
Present Progressive • Ahora estoy divirtiéndome. • Está haciéndolo ahora.
