Matter • Anything that has mass and takes up space (Volume) • Is made of Atoms
Substance • Chemically made • Pure – (Only one “thing”) • Made of only 1 Element or only 1 Compound • Example: Aluminum, Table Salt
Element • Made of 1 kind of atom • All elements are listed on the Periodic Table of Elements. • Examples: H (Hydrogen) and O (Oxygen)
Compound • Made of 2 or more kinds of atoms • Can not be broken down Physically • Bonded together (Glued) • Definite Ratio • Example: H2O (Water)
Mixture • Physically made • Contains MORE THAN 1 “thing”. • Example: Kool-aid,raisin bran, etc.
Heterogeneous Mixture (DIFFERENT THROUGHOUT) • NOT evenly mixed or distributed. • Can you take two samples and get the same amount of both substances in each sample? NO • Example: Beach sand, Lucky Charms cereal, sub sandwhich
SUSPENSION • Particles settle out • Can be separated by a filter. • Examples: Italian Salad Dressing, Muddy Water
COLLOID • Particles Can Not be Separated by a filter. • Particles scatter light. (Tyndall Effect) • Examples: Fog, Smoke, Milk
Homogeneous Mixture • Evenly mixed or distributed • Looks the same throughout • Example: Air (Where do you find the Oxygen in the Air?)
SOLUTIONS • A special type of homogeneous mixture • Small particles that CAN NOT be seen, even with a microscope. • Particles DO NOT settle out. • Examples: Salt Water
