  4. Byzantine Empire • The Byzantine Empire develops its own form of Christianity

  5. Church and State in Byzantine empire • Believed their emperor represented Jesus Christ on earth • The emperor chose the patriarch of Constantinople • Believed God wanted them to preserve and spread Christianity

  6. Religious Arguments • What was the exact relationship between God and Jesus? • Icons- depictions of Christian holy events in churches • Some believed icons could work miracles • Some wanted an end to the use of icons they believed it was a form of idol worship

  7. Emperor Leo III • Disapproved of the use of icons • AD 726 he ordered all icons removed from Churches • Iconoclasts- were government officials who carried out the orders

  8. The Pope • Opposed King Leo III’s orders to remove icons • The Churches in Rome and Constantinople continue to have disputes
