WELCOME TO BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT Mrs. Elizabeth M. Field ENGLISH 1 – FRESHMEN ENGLISH 2 - SOPHOMORES
WEBSITE • My website is presently down and under construction! It should be available SOON. • To access the website, go to www.lschs.org • Select “Quick Links” • Then Select “Faculty and Staff” • Type in my last name “Field” • Select “website” when you find my listing • On this site, I will post a calendar of dates for tests and assignments, resources, links, etc.
COURSE OBJECTIVES • The syllabus outlines the major objectives of this course (copies are available) • The syllabus also includes my contact information by phone and email (both school and home). • Feel free to contact me at home in the evening, on weekends, over the holidays.
READING • Our goal is to develop critical and active reading strategies. • If you see your son reading for this class without a pen in his hand, please remind him of the necessity to take notes while he reads for optimal success • For Sophomores: American Literature Resources on the Internet: http://www.csustan.edu/english/reuben/home.htm
WRITING • Essay Infirmary – We treat, and attempt to cure, all of the following writing ailments: • Dangling Participles • Split Infinitives • Comma Splices • Fragmented Sentences • Subject/Verb and Pronoun Antecedent Disagreements, etc.
WRITING (Cont’d) • Primarily we are teaching the writing of a formal academic essay. The rules and conventions for this writing genre may be different from previous writing instruction your soon has received. • The students are expected to utilize the writing process. • If your son is writing an essay the evening before (or the morning that) the essay is due, please remind him that this is not a pathway to success! • Writing Resources on the Internet • http://owl.english.purdue.edu
SPEAKING • Ample opportunities are afforded your son to speak in class. Class presentations, oral reading, and class participation are important elements of this curriculum. Especially for freshmen and sophomores who hope to participate in A.P. English as Juniors and Seniors, class participation is often the deciding factor in a student’s acceptance into this program.
LISTENING AND NOTE TAKING • Everything presented on the “Smart Board” and the white boards is important! • Students MUST take notes during class every day • Encourage your son to avoid asking the question, “Do we really have to know this stuff?” • Encourage your son to be attentive in class to everyone’s remarks—teacher and student alike.
ACADEMIC SUPPORT In addition to promptly seeking additional help from me, which should be a student’s first response to disappointing results, peer tutoring through the NHS (National Honors Society) is also available. Sometimes this peer tutoring can be very effective. We also have a Writing Center (opened last year) which is staffed by English teachers all day where students may obtain extra help on writing assignments.
ACADEMIC SUPPORT (Cont’d) • Please encourage your son to promptly seek academic support if he is struggling or if his grades are not up to the goals he has set for himself. • If you have specific concerns about your son, please communicate them to me either by telephone or email. • If you email me during the weekend, please use my home email address: r.field@verizon.net
Sources of Disappointing Grades • Before looking elsewhere for causes of disappointing results, your son, should honestly answer these questions: • Have I critically and carefully read all of the assigned material? Have I taken reading notes? • Have I studied for tests?
Have I taken notes in class and been attentive to the classroom presentations? Have I come to class prepared and ready to work? Have I done all of the assigned homework carefully and followed the directions given?
ACADEMIC INTEGRITY In this electronic age, academic integrity presents difficult challenges both for student and teacher. A wealth of academic resources is available on the Internet, and the temptation is great to borrow the ideas of others in the preparation of out-of-class writing assignments. Please know that I fully support and enforce La Salle’s Honor Code; in fact, I served on the Committee that wrote the Code.
CONCLUSION • Your son’s success is important to me. • I make great efforts to get to know the students personally, to evaluate their literacy skills fairly, and to offer them encouragement and support. However, it is the student who must seek the help and ultimately assume responsibility for his academic success.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENDANCE THIS EVENING! • I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO AN ACADEMICALLY CHALLENGING, PRODUCTIVE, AND PLEASANT SCHOOL YEAR.
