What are Polymers? • Plastics are long-chain molecules called polymers. • Addition polymers are made under very high pressure. • When long-chain hydrocarbons in petroleum are cracked, a mixture of saturated hydrocarbons and unsaturated hydrocarbons are created.
AOI: Health and Social Education • Biological polymers affect our everyday lives in many ways. • The amount of the different types of polymers affect our diet and make it either balanced or unbalanced. • It is balanced or unbalanced if you take too much or too small amounts of the different polymers.
Carbohydrates • Made by joining single sugars together. • They can be huge molecules with many sugars joined in a long chain. • Examples: • Sugar • Glucose • Fructose • Starch, can be used by plants to store sugars for energy • Glycogen used to store sugars for energy in human livers.
Fats • Made of GLYCEROL and FATTY ACIDS. • Fats can be either saturated or unsaturated. • Saturated means they have all single bonds. • Unsaturated means they contain double bonds. • A lot of saturated fats in a diet can cause or increase the chance of heart disease
Proteins • Made from amino acids. • There are 20 different types of amino acids in human bodies. • Amino acids form long chains.
Balanced Diet • A balanced diet means that you choose foods in the right amount from the different groups. • Fats and oils are not on the chart because you get enough of them from the other things like eggs and meats. • Eating a balanced diet and exercising each day will help you body stay healthy.
