8thGradeaccelerated reader What do you need to do to be successful in AR?
You will need to meet these literacy standards • 8.4.1.1. and 8.4.2.2-Comprehension- • 8.4.4.4 Vocabulary • 8.4.10.10 Read at grade level • 8.4.10.10 Read independently • 8.4.10.10 a Select my own texts
Your report card will state yes or no next to the following statements • 8.4.1.1 I can understand the texts that I read. YES or NO • 8.4.4.4 I can determine the meaning of words I read YES or NO • 8.4.10.10 I can read at the 8th grade level. YES or NO • 8.4.10.10 I can read independently. YES or NO • 8.4.10.10 I can select my own texts. YES or NO
How do you get a yes on your report card? • 8.4.1.1 I can understand the texts that I read • You must score at or higher than 80% cumulatively on your AR test scores. You need to read and test on a minimum of three books. (Consideration given for books of 20 or more points) They need to be at a reasonably challenging level. The Boxcar Children, Clifford, or Curious George are NOT something you test on. • 8.4.4.4 I can determine the meaning of words I read • You must score an 80% on an academic vocabulary test for 8th grade students administered by the language arts teachers at the end of each quarter. • 8.4.10.10 I can read at the 8th grade level • Based on your STAR Reading Grade Equivalent Score, you read at grade level. You are allowed to read books of any level you’d like (within reason, not Curious George, Clifford, or Junie B Jones UNLESS those truly are where you are at) This portion of your grade is based solely on your STAR test score. • 8.4.10.10 I can read independently. • You read on your own for the 30 minute SSR time at the start of each day. You do not need consistent redirection or reminders to do this. You do not distract others or avoid reading. You do not need to be told to read. • 8.4.10.10 I can select my own texts • You can go to the library and choose texts youwouldlike to read. You are able to choose books you want to finish and aren’t constantly quitting on books and needing to return to the library without finishing.
