The Concept of Skill and Skilled performance KF 2 How skills are performed for effective, consistent performance. Understanding of skill classification terms in relation to performance
Skills & Techniques • What is a skill? • A Movement or series of movements performed with a purpose • What is a technique? • A way of performing a skill • This will vary depending upon the performance context
What makes a skilled performance? • Practice and experience – you learn how and when to use individual skill and techniques effectively • Skill is purposeful - direct end result • Consistently achieve your goals
What makes a skilled performance ? • Able to carry out linked movements with maximum efficiency • 3 Characteristics: • Fluent, controlled movements, min effort • Selects correct options • Use skills which reflect experience and ability
KC 1 Concept of Skill and skilled performance • KF 2:Classification of Skill • Closed --------------------------------------Open • Closed Skills – you are in charge of carrying out. • Same judgements • Self Paced – timing • Stable environment • Same movement patterns
KF 2:Classification of Skill • Open Skills– unpredictable in nature • Differing judgments – other factors • No control of pacing • Changing environment • Movement patterns adapted
KF 2:Classification of Skill • Continuous, Discrete, Serial Skills • Continuous Skill • repeat the same movement • No obvious beginning or end • Can be stopped any time
KF 2:Classification of Skill • Discrete Skill • Single specific skill • Clear beginning and end • Serial skill • Made up of several parts • Tend to be complex movements
KF 2:Classification of Skill • Simple ----------------------------------Complex • Simple skill Complex Skill • Few sub-routines Many sub routines • Easy Difficult • Few decisions Many decisions
KF 2:Classification of Skill • Internally paced------------Externally paced • Internally or self paced – link to closed skill • Control over timing/rate of performance • Do not have to react to opponents actions
KF 2:Classification of Skill • Externally paced skill – link to open skill • Respond to environment/ opponent • External events may affect rate of performance – have to adapt /control • Involve reaction
How to apply this to your planning & performance • Make open skills as closed as possible e.g. through good court movement. Few adaptations required. • Make open skills as closed as possible so that repetition can take place. • Make externally paced skills as internally paced as possible e.g. feeder plays to exact area of court
How to apply this to your planning & performance • As you improve – build in factors that allow skill to be played in game like situation / under pressure. • Link between skill classification and 3 stages of skill learning: • Planning/ Cognitive • Practice/associative • Automatic/autonomous
Task - 3 paragraphs • Why is it important to classify skills • For the skill you have selected as your weakness. Write a paragraph about how you would classify it • How will you take this into consideration when you plan and progress through your programme of work?
