Almaden • What are some things that YOU did not understand about the plot? • Discuss the three characters. Describe how they look, how they act. How is the man “American?” How is the woman “Korean?” • What is the setting of this story? How is the setting of the story important to the story itself?How does the fact that the shop keeper is Korean and the setting is New York affect the story? • What does the reader need to understand about Korean culture to better understand the story?

Discussion Questions part 1 • Describe each of the main characters. • What do they look like? How do they act? What makes them likable or not? • Describe the setting. • Where is the story set? City? Which city? Countryside? Where? • When is the story set? How different would the story be if it was set in 2012? • Talk about the plot. • What happened in the story? Was there something that you didn’t understand? Discuss with your partners the plot and do your best to understand the story. • Discuss the theme of the story. • Was there some sort of lesson to be learned? • What was the author trying to say to the reader?
Discussion Questions part 2 • What do you need to know about Korean culture to fully understand the main character? • What aspects of Korean culture could you find in the story? • (food, language use, housing, family relationships, personal relationships, etc.) • How are these cultural aspects important to understanding the story? • What aspects of Korean history would be important to know to better understand the story? • What kind of difficulties would the translators have in translating these elements of culture into English?
Assignment: • You and your group will prepare a presentation about your story. • You will explain the story itself (what you discussed in “discussion questions part 1” slide previously). • You will explain the role that an understanding of Korean culture plays in the overall understanding the story (what you discussed in “discussion questions part 2” slide previously) • Do not limit yourself to only the things in the previous slides. If you decide that there is something more that we need to know about your story, then you need to tell us. • Presentations will be 10 minutes long and will be given during the first week of December. Everyone in the group must speak. Everyone in the group will get an individual and team score.
Assignment: • Use Powerpoint or Prezi to support your presentation. • This week: Your reading/writing journals are due (wed. or thur.) • Next week: Your reading logs are due and we will have personal interviews during classtime. • The Week after next: Presentations during the double hour, and review for the final exam during the single class. • Four weeks from now: Final exam week (Dec 10-14)
