Future of Water Portals Feedback from Workshop session
Process • Workshop 1 • Inventory of key learning objectives of 40+ participants • Users – needs, access, involvement, interaction • Set up and management • Content – scope, quality, collection, dissemination • Sustainability – process, funding • Technical issues • Multiplication versus integration and interoperability • Break away sessions + reporting back
Process • Workshop 2 • Case presentation: SaniCon • Questions and answers leading to a broader discussion on Portals • Interactive session on critical success factors for setting up and running a Portal • IRC Portal process as an example
Key findings • Websites versus Portals • Websites for branding and internet presence • Portals for collaboration and shared knowledge • Single point of access to aggregated information • Collaboration is weak • People will go back and continue as usual • “It is a dream that everybody is going to collaborate” • Flood of Portal plans and initiatives • “Drowning in websites, thirsty for portals”
What is needed • Improved access to and availability of existing information on key themes targeted for specific audiences • Portals need to be an integral part of a broader portfolio of information and communication products and channels • Building skills and competencies for collecting, sharing and using information at grass root level
Suggestions for action • Governments / Private sector must invest in local ICT infrastructure and skills • Focus on local solutions for local problems • Invest in partnerships and training • Build and expand on existing partner initiatives, e.g. • WIN South Africa • Streams • Pay more attention to incentives for collaboration and the sustainability of initiatives • Establish a working group for the creation of a common thesaurus
