Lesson Objective • To gain an understanding that liquids differ in color, smell, and thickness. Students will also observe that solids and liquids have different properties.

Materials • Big Book Solids, Liquids, and Gases • Liquids Worksheet • Water • Dish soap • Oil • Syrup • BBQ sauce • Honey • Clear plastic cups • Clipboards • Pencils • Various vases • Beads
Opening • Students will be seated on the carpet. We will read the Big Book, Solids, Liquids, and Gases together. • We will discuss that a liquid is a form of matter that takes the shape of its container. • A large table will be at the front of the classroom with the various vases along with water and beads. • I will place the beads into one vase and ask the students what they observe that the beads did.
Opening • I will then place water in the vase and ask the students what they observed that happened differently. • I will explain that liquids, unlike solids, take the shape of its container. • I will then go on to talk about color, smell, and the thickness of the water.
Activity • Students will be placed in groups of 4 and take turns putting their fingers in the different liquids. • Students will put an X in the correct place for color, no color, strong smell, no smell, thick, and not thick.
Activity • Students will rotate through all five stations with their pencils and clipboards, marking an X in the appropriate column and when they are finished, they will return to the carpet with their clipboards.
Assessment of Learning • The Liquids Activity Sheet with the X’s in columns for color, smell, and thickness. Questions: • What did you notice about the different liquids? • How many of the liquids were colored? • How many of the liquids smelled? • How many of the liquids were thick? • How many were not thick? • Why did the solid beads lie on top of each other and stay in the same place and all of the liquids changed shape?
Closure • There are many different types of liquid in the world. All of the liquids change shape when placed into another container. The particles in a liquid are not as close together as those in a solid. Because of this, the liquids can move around.
