  3. “Or do they envy men for what Allah has given them of His bounty?” (4:54) • “Out of envy from themselves.” (2:109) • “From the mischief of the envious one when he practices envy.” (113:5)

  4. WHY IS IT IMPORTANT??? • fueled by expectations that one deserves recognition and success over another individual. “It is the heart of one that is pious, pure, and is free of sin, transgressions, hatred and envy.” (Ibn Majah)

  5. ENVY- DEFINITIONS • A painful or resentful awareness of an advantage enjoyed by another joined with a desire to possess the same advantage (Merriam- Webster) • Envy and Jealousy

  6. EMERGENCE • Envy can be seen at different ages in different ways: • Childhood – Sibling Rivalry • Adults – Professional and romantic relationships

  7. INSIGHT TO AN ENVIOUS MIND • Inferiority and dejectedness • Enmity "Those who spend (in Allah's Cause) in prosperity and in adversity, who repress anger, and who pardon men. Verily, Allah loves the good doers.“ (Surah al-Imran,134)

  8. Kibr (pride), fear and love of authority “It is these that Allah as favored among us?” (Surah al-Anam, 53) “And they say: 'Why is not this Qur'aan sent down to some great man of the two towns?” (Surah az-Zukhruf , 31) “If you were to obey a human being life yourselves, then verily, you indeed would be losers.” (Soorah al-Muminoon , 34)

  9. DOES A MUSLIM ENVY?? • “There has come to you the disease of the nations before you, jealousy and hatred. This is the 'shaver' (destroyer); I do not say that it shaves hair, but that it shaves (destroys) faith” [(Hasan) Jamee at-Tirmidhee (2434)] • Ansari incident • Levels of envy (3)

  10. Gibtah “There should be no envy except of two: a man whom Allah gives wealth enabling him to spend in the truth, and a man to whom Allah gives wisdom and he judges with it and teaches others”. (Al-Bukhari)

  11. CONSEQUENCES • Disbelief “Those who envy people for what Allah has given them of Bounty.” (at-Tabaranee) • “Do not harbor a grudge against one another, nor envy one another, nor show enmity; and do not show your backs to one another; be a brotherhood of servants of Allah. It is not lawful for a Muslim to shun his brother beyond three days.” (Agreed upon)

  12. “Beware of envy because envy consumes the virtues just as the fire consumes the firewood.” (Abu Dawud)

  13. SOLUTIONS • Self awareness • “Do not wish for what we have favored some of you over others.” (Surah an-Nisa, 32) • Sibling Jealousy • Standard : Taqwa • “Surely, the most noble of you to Allah is the most God-fearing.” (Surah al-Hujurat, 13)

  14. Seek refuge • “I seek refuge in the Lord of the dawn from the evil of envious when he envies.” (Surah al-Falaq, 1-2) • “Do not look to those above you. Look to those below you, as it will more likely remind you of Allah's favors bestowed on you.” (Sahih Bukhari; Sahih Muslim)

  15. “If one of you looks at someone wealthier and better built than him, he should also look at someone of lower standard than himself.” (Sahih Muslim)

  16. “I wish I were given what he was given and did with it what he did.” (Sahih Bukhari; Sahih Muslim) • “Contentment opens the door of peace and security for the slave.” (Immam Ibn Qayyim)

  17. Everyone is sent with a toolbox to work in this world. If you envy someone because he has one cool tool you would like to have then before that check your tool box, Allah has given you some other unique tool that is better than hers. (Faiez Seyal) • “Oh Allah! If I hurt any Mumin, then make it (my deed) a source of nearness to you on the day of judgment.” (Sahih Bukhari)

  18. “Shake hands, for this will dispel rancor, and exchange gifts and love one another, for this will dispel hatred.” Maalik in al-Muwatta (1413)
