  4. Reference Maps • Physical map- show natural features such as landforms, rivers and other bodies of water.

  5. Thematic/Special Purpose Map • Shows a specific topic, theme, or data. (Ex: cattle ranching, climates, population, rainfall, soil types)

  9. Road Map • Shows: highways and roads, cities, towns, state and county lines. This always has a map scale.

  13. Map Key Maps often use symbols or colors to represent things, and the map key explains what they mean.

  15. Compass Rose A circle or decorative device printed on a map or chart showing the points of the compass measured from true north and usually magnetic north.

  16. Cardinal Directions Main points on a compass rose: North, South, East, West.

  17. Intermediate Directions In between points on a compass rose: Northeast, Northwest, Southeast, Southwest.
