What is Reverse Outlining? • Reverse outlining is a revision tool that can help us, as writers, see if what we’ve put together actually works. • Usually, we use outlining as a brainstorming or getting started tool for organization. However, it can also be used in a later part of the writing process to check for clarity, flow, and organization.

  3. So How Does It Work? • Read the essay on page 97 in your text book. • On a sheet of paper, write down the following: • Thesis statement/main idea of the piece: • Brief summary of paragraph 1: • Summary paragraph 2: • 3 • 4 • 5 • 6 • 7

  4. Okay, now what? • Answer the following questions: • Does each paragraph support the thesis statement? • Do any of the paragraph ideas repeat each other? • Are the paragraphs building on each other (following from one idea to the next) or are the ideas scattered? • Are any of the summary sentences longer than the others? What do you think this might mean? • Do the paragraphs seem to be in the right order? • After answering the above questions, how might you reorganize the essay? Write some thoughts here.

  5. Homework! • Essay 1 due next week. Please turn in: • Final draft of essay • Your reverse outline of your own essay • Your rough draft with my feedback
