Plessy v. Ferguson • African-Americans look to the courts to protect their rights • 1896 – Plessy vs. Ferguson • Supreme Court ruled that “SEPARATE BUT EQUAL” did not violate the 14th Amendment (legal equality) • Allowed segregation and Jim Crow laws in the South, as long as “equal” services were provided

W.E.B. Du Bois • Demanded immediate political equality and civil rights for African-Americans • Formed the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in 1909 • Ph.D. from Harvard • Founded the Niagara Movement: to promote university education for African-Americans
