Technical review on UPS power distribution for LHC Beam Dumping System
Brief introduction to the review • Background: • The LBDS front end crates have experienced a power failure in two occasions in 2012 triggering an asynchronous beam dump (fortunately w/o beam) • In both cases the failure occurred in combination with a short circuit of a Wiener power supply input stage • The upstream circuit breakers switched off and cut a larger part of the power distribution • The initial power system architecture showed redundancy design weakness • As a result it was decided: • To put together all people knowledgeable in the different domains of this system • (beam dump, UPS, power network, power supplies, controls, reliability and redundant systems) • To illustrate and debate all technical aspects and mitigation implementations • To come up with recommendations for effective solutions in the short and long terms F.
