Labor’s Response to Industrialization Chapter 14: Was the rise industry good for American workers?
HOT ROC: Instructions • You will receive a role for the simulation • You will then find others with similar interests to form an interest group of workers. • You may have to choose between interest groups. • No group can have more than 5 people. • Procedure: • Your group represents a specific group of workers at a factory. • You have to write up a proposed labor contract with only three points that you want your boss to agree to. • Be specific– ask for a specific wage, not simply higher wages. • Once you have your three pointsyou must convince the majority of other interest groups to agree. • Groups could only sign one contract, including their own. • Your boss (Mr. MC) is greedy and stubborn, he will reject proposals that ask for too much and may reject an entire contract if it angers him.
HOT ROC: • Which contract did your group agree to sign? Why? • What was difficult about the assignment? Easy? • How might this simulate the challenge that unions faced in the late industrial age?
