Communication • When students communicate ideas the student must reflect on their learning and organize and condense the ideas • This also makes them focus on using key terms from the math lessons • It is important to learn vocabulary in math as well as other subjects
Communication • Important to be able to articulate ideas through writing as well as verbally • If a student can express the ideas clearly to other students and teachers. Their understanding of the subject matter is at a high level.
Communication Examples • An example of communication is doing a problem using an algebraic equation or simply drawing out a picture. This is two different ways to communicate ideas and both can lead to the right answer • Here is an example that was posted on NCTM: There are some rabbits and some hutches. If one rabbit is put in each hutch, one rabbit will be left without a hutch. If two rabbits are put in each hutch, one hutch will remain empty. How many rabbits and how many hutches are there?
Communication Examples • In 3-5 grade students learn that how one variable is related to another. For example if a sandwich cost $3 how many dollars will the student need if he buys x number of sandwiches. The student should be able to communicate this idea by multiplying 3 x n sandwiches.
Progression of Communication • Throughout the grade levels each student should increase there ability to communicate the different ideas about math. • At an elementary level students are not expected to be able to effective write about the ideas that they have learned. At middle school and high school levels students should both be able to verbally and
Progression of Communication • At a high school level students will be able to communicate math ideas through complex equations and terms.
