What causes Acid Rain? • Acid Rain is a mixture of wet and dry deposition from atmosphere containing higher then normal amounts of nitric and sulfuric acid. • Most sulfuric acid comes from power plants that use Cole as their fuel. And the nitrogen oxide comes from the automobiles.
Effects on Buildings • Acid destroys and corrodes structures made out of limestone, sandstone and marble. • The calcium sulfate is soluble in water, which is why the limestone dissolves and crumbles. • History has shown many sculptures in the U.S get destroyed because of acid rain.
Effects on Water bodies Many water streams examined in National Surface Water Survey duffer from chronic acidity, a condition in which water has a constant low pH level. The Survey investigated the effects of acid rain in over 1,000 lakes. After this, thousands of miles and streams are believed to be sensitive to acidification. Acid rain has caused acidity in 75% of the acidic lakes and about 50 percent of acidic streams.
Effects on Soil and plant life • Both natural vegetation and crops are effected by acid rain. The roods are damaged by the acidic rainfall, causing the growth of the plant to stop. Nutrients in the soil are destroyed by the acidity. • Even if the plant survives, the damaged nutrients will make the plant very weak and unable to survive climatic conditions like strong wind, heavy rainfall or a short dry period.
Effects on Human Health • The three main effects on human health is that it effects the air we breathe, the water we drink and the food we eat. • Combination of nitrogen and sulfuric oxides may lead to the irritation of of the human lung function. Although it is not common, these oxides can lead to diseases and weaknesses in eyes , nose and throat.
Prevention of Acid Rain • Prevention of acid rain is very important for our future. • Since acid rain is caused mainly by the emission of sulphur dioxide from coal-fired power plants. There are a number of preventions, including switching fuel sources to natural gas, oil or switching to low-sulphur coal. • Other prevention methods would be traffic restrictions and equalizing acidity in water system. • The community could help by holding strikes and protests against coal-powered power plants. Also we could walk more and drive less.
