What Can I do With GarageBand? • Assemble pre-recorded Loops (Blue) • Compile, cut, edit and save pre-recorded music (Orange) • Compose, Play, and Record my own music! (Green) • Plus with GarageBand ‘11, you can synch iPads together to form an interactive band experience!
Getting Started • Start the Project • Name it! • Question time! • Time Signature? • Key Signature? 1. I placed my GarageBand App in the Dock 2. Click New Project & ignore the rest (for now)

Working with Loopsin GarageBand • Start with Loops 2. Choose an Instrument 3. Click the ‘wave’ icon to listen to the loop. 4. Then drag it to the Timeline. 1. Click the ‘eye’ icon to show the Loop collection 5. Click the ‘edit’ icon to open the Loop’s Wave and Audio Region
Working with Loopsin GarageBand • The Green Loops can be edited! 2. Choose an Instrument 4. Then drag it to the Timeline. 3. Click the ‘wave’ icon to listen to the loop. The Green Loops are Editable 1. Click the ‘eye’ icon to show the Loop collection 5. Click the ‘edit’ icon to open the Piano Roll or Score 6. The Bars correlate to the tone position on the keyboard and can be lengthened, shortened, or moved to different tone position by dragging.
Working with Loopsin GarageBand • Know the Score!! 2. The ‘Playhead’ can be moved to locate a certain place in the timeline. 1. Click the ‘score’ icon to show the notation. 3. Individual Notes can be ‘clicked’ and moved up and down the staff to change the pitch. 4. The Deck operates like a cassette deck.
Working with Loopsin GarageBand 1. Click Arrow icon in upper right corner of loop and drag to right to extend. • Add some Audio Effects!! 3. With the desired Layer tack selected, Click the Edit tab to display ‘effect rack’ 2. Click the ‘i’ icon to display the Browse/Edit panel. 4. Click the Green dash to activate the effect.
Working with Loopsin GarageBand • Editing Audio Effects!! 1. Click the Effect Icon to launch its editing panel 2. Drag the line of desired area to alter the effect. 3. Or choose one from the list! 4. Click in an empty ‘rack’ to add a new effect.
Working with Recorded Songsin GarageBand • Pre-recorded Songs will be Orange in the Timeline • They can be cut to edit length or combine with another clip/loop 5. Click a two points and adjust accordingly. 1. Click the Media Browser Icon to launch its panel 4. Click the Track Volume to display decibel line in timeline 3. Open Audio Region, drag over desired area and click to ‘Cut’. 2. Choose a song from iTunes and drag to Timeline to add a track layer.
Composing in GarageBand • With USB technology, MIDI Instruments and Microphones can be ‘plugged’ into the USB Port and used for Analog recording • A New Track is required. • Track/Layers are in Green USB Microphone USB Mobile Pre-amp with Phantom Power to plug Guitar into. USB MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) Keyboard Controller. Software driver required.
Composing in GarageBand • Creating a New Instrument layer. • Software Instrument (MIDI Controls, you pick the sound!) • Real Instrument (requires a USB Microphone, like the Yeti) • Electric Guitar (requires a USB Phantom Power Pre-Amp)
