LESSON 11-1Computer Systems Goals • Identify the main elements of a computer system. • Describe input devices and processing activities. • Explain computer storage media and output types. Chapter 11
computer system hardware software computer network central processing unit (CPU) program computer language operating system software application software Key Terms Chapter 11
Computers in Society • Computers are everywhere. • Stores • Factories • Hospitals • Banks • Offices • Homes • Managers must plan and implement computerized activities and decide how best to use technology to serve the production and distribution needs of the organization. Chapter 11
ELEMENTS OF A COMPUTER SYSTEM • Input • Processing • Memory and storage • Output Chapter 11
Elements of a computer system Hardware – physical elements of a computer system (items that can be touched) • Examples: • Keyboard • Microphone • Mouse • Monitor • Printers Software – the instructions that run the computer system • Examples: • Word processing • Spreadsheet • communication Chapter 11
COMPUTER NETWORKS • Network – computers linked together • Share hardware, software, and data • Largest network in the world – the Internet • Internet • For accessing the World Wide Web (a subset of the Internet) • For exchanging e-mail • intranet • Functions like a typical Web site • Used to share information within an organization Chapter 11
>> C H E C K P O I N T List the four main elements of a computer system. Chapter 11
INPUT • First major component of a computer system • Input devices- used to put data into a computer • Examples: • Keyboard – most common • Mouse – most common • Joystick • Touch-sensitive monitors • Light pens • Scanners • microphones Chapter 11
PROCESSING • Second major component of a computer system • Processing takes place in the central processing unit (cpu) – the “brains” • In a pc the cpu consists of tiny wafers or chips that carry instructions and data • The instructions are written with a program – step-by-step instructions that tell the computer what to do Chapter 11
PROCESSING • Computer language – a system of letters, words, numbers, and symbols used to communicate with a computer. • Two main types of computer programs: • Operating system software – translates commands and allows application programs to interact with the computer hardware • Application software – programs that perform specific tasks • Games, accounting, calculator Chapter 11
Operating system software • Windows • OS X • Linux Chapter 11
Application software • Word processing • MS Word – PC • Pages – Mac • Spreadsheet • OpenOffice – PC or Mac • MS Excel - PC • Numbers – Mac • Payroll • Quickbooks Chapter 11
>> C H E C K P O I N T What are common input devices? Chapter 11
MEMORY • Third major component of a computer system • Temporarily stores the program and data • Measured in bytes (8 bits) • megabytes(mb) • gigabytes (gb) • terabytes (tb) • petabytes (pb) • exabyte (eb) • zetabyte (zb) • yottabyte(yb) • Volatile – when power is turned off whatever is stored in memory is removed Chapter 11
Storage • Saving for later use • Internal – memory • Auxiliary – hard drive • Auxiliary External – cds, dvd, flash drives Chapter 11
OUTPUT • Final component of a computer system • Purpose of computer processing • Results of processed data • Types: • Text • Graphic • Audio • video Chapter 11
>> C H E C K P O I N T How do internal and external memory differ? Chapter 11
LESSON 11-2Business Applications of Technology Goals • Describe the components of a management information system (MIS). • Identify computer applications in service industries. • Discuss e-commerce activities. Chapter 11
Key Terms • management information system (MIS) • computer-assisted instruction (CAI) • e-commerce Chapter 11
MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEMS Government Customers GatheringData Accounting Inventory Sales ReportingData AnalyzingData StoringData Chapter 11
Management Information Systems • Management information systems – an ordered system of processing and reporting information in an organization. Chapter 11
COMPONENTS OF AN MIS • Gathering data • Analyzing data • Sorting data • Reporting results Chapter 11
Providing information • 4 main categories: • Financial • Budgets • Sales reports • Financial statements • Production and inventory • Production summaries • Lists of tools and supplies • Finished goods Chapter 11
Providing information • Marketing and sales • Data on customer needs • Current economic conditions • Actions of competitors • Human resources • Salaries • Employee benefit data • Employee evaluations Chapter 11
DATA SOURCES • External data sources • Financial institutions • Government agencies • customers • Internal data sources • Accounting records • Inventory information • Company sales figures Chapter 11
THE MIS IN ACTION The operation of MIS involves: 1. Identify the information needs of the organization. 2. Obtain facts, figures, and other data. 3. Process, analyze, and organize data in a useful manner. 4. Distribute information reports to those who make decisions. 5. Update data files as needed. Chapter 11
>> C H E C K P O I N T What are the four components of a management information system? Chapter 11
TECHNOLOGY IN SERVICE INDUSTRIES • Public service • Government • Police records • Education • Schools • Computer Assisted Instruction – the use of computers to help people learn or improve skills • Health care • hospitals • Financial services Chapter 11
>> C H E C K P O I N T What service industries make extensive use of computers? Chapter 11
ELECTRONIC COMMERCE(E-commerce) • E-commerce refers to conducting business transactions using the Internet or other technology. Chapter 11
TYPES OF E-COMMERCE • Business-to-Consumer (B2C) • Business-to-Business (B2B) • Consumer-to-Business (C2B) • Consumer-to-Consumer (C2C) Chapter 11
E-COMMERCE MATRIX Chapter 11
E-COMMERCE ACTIVITIES • Providing product information • Promoting a company • Selling online • Conducting market research • Making payments • Obtaining parts and supplies • Tracking shipments Chapter 11
GLOBAL E-COMMERCE • Importing and exporting • Videoconferencing Chapter 11
