Architecture Hall Assessed By: Jillian Petrin, Julia Terlinchamp, Gabriel Wan, Brian King, & Amelia Albert
History • Built 1909 • Originally built for Art Museum & Chemistry Dept. • 1950s became Architecture Hall • 1987 $2.8 million renovation
Accessible Entrance • Route of Travel • Meets minimal standards • Repair uneven paving • Improve landscaping • Create direct route
Ramps • Add ramp to front of building • Existing ramp • Needs additional railing • Add directions to nearest accessible entrance • Structure of stairs on wooden platform • Ramp too narrow & blocked by vegetation
Parking & Drop Off Areas • 4 Disabled parking spots • 1 Van-accessible without adequate clearance for wheelchair lift
Entrance • Create front entrance accessibility • Install lighter doors • Recalibrate handle bars
Navigating Hallways • Widen door leading to elevator • Enlarge T-shaped spaces and hallways • Remove obstructing partitions
Doors • Install swing-clear hinges • Replace door knobs with lever or loop handles
Rooms & Spaces • Numerous doors to classrooms less than 36 inches wide • Improve access by eliminating obstructions
Seats, Tables & Counters • Stadium seating only allows front row use for wheelchair users • Every room should have an adjustable table for a wheelchair or any PWD
Stairs • Restroom between 1st & 2nd floors • Improve “non-slip” stairs • Add mid-railing • Create better support at end
Elevator • Install verbal or audible signals • Lower call buttons or provide reach sticks • Install raised lettering & brail next to buttons
Elevator • Install tactile signs to identify floor numbers • Modify communication • Make door stay open longer
Getting to Restrooms • Inadequate directions • One set located between stair levels • Create more accessible restrooms
Restrooms: Doorways & Passages • Relocate garbage cans • Improve accessibility of handles
Restrooms: Stalls • Difficulty closing doors • Difficulty entering • Widen loop of door handle • Toilet seat too low
Drinking Fountains • Slightly higher then required by ADA • Add buttons to side and front • Protrudes more then 4” • Install cane-detectable barrier
Telephones • Way too high! • Protrudes more then 4” • Install cane-detectable barrier • Not hearing-aid compatible • Only two telephones
Signage • Brail • Accurate directions to toilets & telephones • Not standardized direction • Inadequate directions to accessible ramp when entering building • Better visibility of map
Overall Assessment • The building failed to meet many regulations • Architecture students should be educated in a building which is a prime example of ADA regulations! • Renovation Spring 2006
