The Project Description • This is an action inquiry project. Schools that choose to participate in this project should have a good working knowledge of the quality teaching framework, have identified comprehension as a focus of their school management plan and be able to support the action inquiry activities of the team members.
The Project Description • Teams will be assisted in using school data to identify an inquiry area and question, match and prioritise strategies for implementation, plan consultancy support and in-school action. It is expected that teams will complete a minimum of two action inquiry cycles (plan, act, observe, reflect) within this project.
The Project Description • School teams will investigate how comprehension involves responding to, interpreting, analysing and evaluating texts by using metacognitive comprehension strategies including: • making connections • visualising • questioning • monitoring • predicting • summarising
The Project Description • Teams will complete an action inquiry cycle (plan, act, observe, reflect) within this project. Teams will be expected to regularly access a project wiki and to complete a project report. Teams will present their report at the project show
Dates and Venues: Term 1 • Facilitator’s Workshop Monday 22 February 2.30am–4.30pm Glenfield Education Office
Dates and Venues: Term 1 • Workshop 1: 8.30am–4.00pm Liverpool Catholic Club Participants will – • frame their team action inquiry question • share their action inquiry context • frame their action inquiry question and action plan • use school data to identify areas for action • deepen their knowledge and understanding of the definition of comprehension • learn about comprehension strategies
In Between Tasks for Workshop 1 • Access the wiki and download resources from the Facilitator’s page • Meet with your team to: • Show them the wiki and get them signed up • Distribute project resources – electronic and paper • Collect data – • Define project context – who, when, how, why? • Upload context statement to the wiki • Plan workshop sharing session • Start to refine research question (to be finalised and uploaded after session 1) • Collect recommended resources • Organise Workshop 1 school planning time and resources • Ensure all team members have Workshop 1 agenda • Ensure all team members have Workshop 1 pre-reading task
Dates and Venues: Term 2 Workshop 2: 8.30am–4.00pm Liverpool Catholic Club Participants will: • Investigate the explicit instruction of comprehension strategies • develop class learning plans • explore strategies to maximise learning • book consultancy support and continue team planning
Dates and Venues: Term 2 Between session task Participants will: • upload project information and complete a minimum of two action inquiry cycles • collect a range of qualitative and quantitative data to document the action inquiry process • reflect and report on the success of their project and submit by due date • prepare showcase presentation

Key Strategies and Outcomes Participants will – • build deep understanding of the strategies students need to use and understand when comprehending texts • build deep understanding of how to explicitly teach comprehension strategies in a balanced and integrated way • develop a student learning plan for comprehension • examine specific teaching ideas can be used to support students’ use of comprehension strategies
School Commitment Project Activities • Collect and collate school data to inform an action inquiry. • Implement appropriate strategies in response to the analysis of the data. • Complete a report at the conclusion of the project and present this at the project showcase. Teacher Release • Participating teachers will require a minimum of 4.5 days release to participate effectively in this project.

Reflection and Evaluation • Teachers will be expected to reflect and report on the success of their project in relation to their stated outcomes by completing a project report and project showcase presentation. • Along the journey there will be an expectation that teams participate in and interact through the Wiki

Where to from here? • lead a team meeting to ensure team members have an understanding of the project purpose and organisation and the action inquiry method • Collect data to identify areas for action and develop a brief statement of context within which the action inquiry is being implemented. This is to be shared with other school teams during workshop 1 • access the project wiki download and distribute pre-reading task to team members
