HURRICANE SANDY • Tropical Depression #18 • Became a Tropical Storm on 10/22/12 • Sandy was the 18th named storm of the Hurricane Season and 10th hurricane • Classified as a post-tropical storm prior to landfall • Made landfall just south of Atlantic City, NJ on 10/29/12
HURRICANE SANDY • The previous record tide level at Sandy Hook, set in 1960 by Hurricane Donna, was shattered by 3.2 feet at which time the gauge broke. • Record wave heights were recorded near entrance of NY Harbor @ 32.5 ft on Monday, 10/29 at 8:50 PM. This exceeded previous record of 25 ft during Irene.
RESPONSE TO SANDY • 10/26: EOC activated • 10/27: Governor declares State of Emergency • 10/28: Gov issues mandatory evacuation of barrier islands from Sandy Hook to Cape May • 10/29: Sandy makes landfall at Atlantic City • 10/30: Major Disaster Declaration from President • 11/2: Gov issues EO 108 rationing fuel • 11/7: A Nor Easter impacts the state • 11/8: Transition begins to JFO
RESPONSE ISSUES/CHALLENGES • Municipal government destroyed in some communities • Transportation systems off-line • Water & Sewerage Plants off-line • Fuel shortages – supply chain disrupted, fueling stations w/o power • Sheltering/Transitional Housing • 7,500 people sheltered in 127 shelters
Executive Order No. 107 In light of the National Weather Service’s categorization of Sandy as a post-tropical storm, it shall be a violation of N.J.A.C. 11:2- 42.7 for any insurer to apply a mandatory or optional hurricane deductible to the payment of claims for property damage attributable to Sandy
Executive Order 105 NOW, THEREFORE, I, CHRIS CHRISTIE, Governor of the State of New Jersey, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and by the Statutes of this State, do hereby ORDER and DIRECT: 1. Celebrations of Halloween scheduled for October 31, 2012 in all parts of New Jersey shall be held on Monday, November 5, 2012.

OTHER RECOVERY INFORMATION • 800,OO0 volunteer hours logged at a cost-benefit of $20M (10% of groups reporting) • 41,000 New Jersey households are currently receiving temporary rental assistance from FEMA. • NJ Transitional Shelter Assistance (TSA) • 730 evacuees still in hotels @ $30M *98% in NJ; 2 % in 5 other States • NJ Transitional Housing Units (THUs) 171 Commercial inspection sites requsted; 103 considered feasible; 88 pads have been leased; 82 units are on site; 52 units now occupied • One Hundred-thirteen (113) families have moved into Fort Monmouth (Monmouth County): 44 in Bldg 365; 27 in Bldg 360; 42 in Megill 3&4 BDR duplexes
