There are about 200,000 single fathers in the UK. A charity for single parents, Gingerbread, studied 115 single fathers. A quarter of the fathers questioned said that they had given up their jobs. Of those fathers in jobs, a quarter said that being a single parent had affected their careers negatively. Men were expected to work long hours or work away from home. The charity argued that people were not supportive of men who wanted to spend time with their children because being a single father is not seen as a norm. they called for family-friendly workplaces to help both men and women Reasons: 1. Lone Parent’s job is usually part-time/low-paid. 2. Former partner neglects financial needs. 3. Average financial support from former partner is only £40 per week. Children’s Misbehaviours are caused by family background. Nuclear Family is still recommended Children’s Misbehaviours are caused by parental conflicts or being poor Think about the following statement: the government should not give benefits to single parents. They should be encouraged to work for a living. What arguments can you make for and against this idea Should parents stay together in a bad relationship for the sake of the children? Make five points for and five against the question.
