Provides advanced research, training, support, and university-industry interaction in biotechnology.
29 years of Progress in Biotechnology Established in 1983, the BioTechnology Institute is a joint venture of the College of Biological Sciences and the College of Science and Engineering.
The BioTechnology Institute Continues to be a Cornerstone of University-Industry Interaction in the LifeSciences Renewed support from the University of Minnesota Continuous improvement and transformation
The BioTechnology Institute faculty represent four colleges at the University of Minnesota: COLLEGES • The College of Biological Sciences (CBS) • The College of Science and Engineering (CSE) • The Academic Health Center (AHC) • The College of Food, Agricultural, and Natural Resource Sciences (CFANS)

Biotechnology Resource Center A service provided by the Biotechnology Institute • Facility • The 5000-square-foot facility is located on the University of Minnesota’s St. Paul campus. • Equipment includes: • 14 fermenters with volumes of 6L, 10L, 20L, 75L, 300L, and 550L • 5 x 20L light-ring photobioreactors • batch and continuous-flow centrifuges • microfluidizer, high-pressure homogenizer, & French press • bench- to pilot-scale ultra-filtration units • bench- to pilot-scale chromatography • freeze dryer Fermentation/Cell Growth • Cultivation of bacteria, yeast & algae • Process development & optimization • Pilot-scale production Recombinant Protein Expression • E. coli & other bacterial expression systems • Pichia pastoris & S. cerevisiae Downstream Processing • Recovery and purification of proteins & small molecules GMP Capabilities • Fully established quality system • Production of Phase I and Phase II clinical trial material

Proteomics Analysis Core Services & Instrumentation: • 2D gel electrophoresis • DIGE with Typhoon Scanner (red & green laser) • High-throughput spot picking (Genomics Solution, ProPic 2) • Automated protein digestion (Genomics Solution, ProPrep 2) • 2D HPLC analysis (ProteoSep) • Isotope Coded Affinity Tagging (ICAT) • All units work in conjunction with mass spec analysis in the Center for Mass Spectrometry in the Life Sciences
