Structure of the Respiratory System epiglottis nose mouth lungs trachea pharynx trachea Bronchus (bronchi) diaphragm bronchioles
The Alveoli Each alveolus is a tiny air sac at the end of a bronchiole. All together the alveoli look like bunches of grapes. Oxygen from the air diffuses into the tiny blood vessels surrounding each alveolus. Carbon dioxide diffuses out of the blood vessels.
Inhalation and Exhalation The diaphragm moves DOWN and the rib cage moves UP and OUT. Increases chest cavity so air rushes in. Inhalation Exhalation Inhalation: Exhalation: The diaphragm moves UP and the rib cage moves IN and DOWN. Decreases chest cavity so air is pushed out.
Materials: scissors 1 straw Cup with hole Tape 1 small balloon 1 large balloon Instructions for making a lung model: Attach one small balloon to one straw using tape. 2) Insert the straws through the hole so the balloon is inside the cup. Seal bottom of the hole around the straw using tape. 3) Cut a large balloon open to fit around the bottom of the cup. Attach the large balloon across the bottom of the cup. Seal it with tape 4) To make the lungs breath, pull the bottom “diaphragm” in and out to change the chest cavity volume!
Homework: Complete the respiratory system diagram. Read Textbook pages 103-104
