  2. The Short Story • A work of fiction written in prose, usually in a narrative format • Written more to the point than longer works of fiction, such as novels • Concentrates on a single incident, in a single setting, with a small number of characters and a single theme • Generally under 10,000 words

  3. Plot Structure of Short Stories • Plot is the literary element that describes the structure of a story • It refers to the arrangement of events and actions within a story and the reason for that arrangement

  4. The Components of the Plot Climax: the turning point; the most intense moment, either mentally or in action Rising Action: the series of conflicts and crises in the story that lead to the climax Falling Action: all of the action which follows the climax Exposition: the start of the story; the situation before the action begins Resolution: the conclusion, the tying together of all of the threads

  5. Types of Plots • Plots can be relayed in: • Chronological order • Flashback • In media res (in the middle of things) • When the story starts in the middle of the action without explanation

  6. Conflict • Without conflict, there is no plot • Conflict is the dramatic struggle between two forces in a story

  7. Types of Conflict • Interpersonal Conflict • Human vs. Human • Human vs. Nature • Human vs. Society • Intrapersonal (Internal) Conflict • Human vs. Self

  8. Protagonist vs. Antagonist • Protagonist • Main character • The events and actions within the plot revolve around the protagonist • The audience is meant to relate most to the protagonist • Often referred to as the “good guy” • But, the protagonist can be a clear villain

  9. Protagonist vs. Antagonist • Antagonist • A character, group of characters, or an institution that presents the opposition that the protagonist must contend with • The antagonist may be the story’s hero, if the protagonist is a villain • For example, the antagonist could be a police officer • Sometimes antagonists and protagonists can overlap, depending upon what the objectives of each are
