THINK “OUTSIDE-THE-BOX” WEDNESDAY! Take out last night’s homework Warm Up is on the next slide. Start thinking what you remember about LINE PLOTS…

Homework Answers: WB 30 • 1) • 2) 12, 15, 17, 18, 20, 20, 26, 31, 31, 32, 32, 45, 46 • 3) 44, 46, 48, 50, 52, 54, 56, 67, 81, 83, 85, 87 • 4) 6 7 5) • 7 2 5 7 • 8 0 1 5 6 6 • 9 2 4 4 • Key 9 2 = 92 key: 9 6 represents 96 3 8 represents 83
Homework Answers: WB 31 • 1) mean: 7 median: 8 mode: 8 • 2) mean: 5.5 median: 4.2 mode: 4.2 • 3) mean: 43.7 median: 43.5mode: 42, 43, 44 • 4) mean: 19.25 median: 15 mode: 6 • 5) mean: $375 median: $358 mode: $354 • 6) 31,638,800 sq. mi. 7) 28,557,500 sq. mi. • 8) mean: 27,340 ft. median: 27,353 ft.
Box and Whisker Plots—what are they? • Help interpret data and the way data is distributed • Show variability in data • Picture representation of data • Show the median, quartiles (other “special” medians!) • Can be drawn vertically or horizontally • Segments extending from the box are called “whiskers” • Whiskers stop at the highest and lowest values called “extremes” UNLESS there is an outlier! • Outliers are represented with a single dot • Each whisker & part of the box represents 25% (1/4) of the data
Mnemonic Device—use the BWP Hand! 125% 4 Between each of your fingers!
Steps to make a BWP • 1) Order the data from LEAST to GREATEST • 2) Identify the lower and upper EXTREMES • 3) Find the median (a.k.a. “Q2”) • 4) Find the Q1: median of the lower half of the data Find the Q3: median of the upper half of the data • 5) Graph the 5 points you just found ABOVE a # line • 6) Connect the points to make it look like the BWP! Let’s go try some together…
Data: 25, 21, 15, 13, 17, 19, 19, 21 LE: 13 Q1: 16 Med: 19 Q3: 21 UE: 25 • 1) Order the data from LEAST to GREATEST 13 15 17 19 19 21 21 25 • 2) Identify the lower and upperEXTREMES • 3) Identify the median • 4) Find Q1: (median of the lower half!) 13 15 17 19 19 21 21 25 • Find Q3: Median of the upper half!)

What are the similarities and differences of EVEN vs. ODD amounts of numbers in the data set? • EVEN: 2 4 4 7 8 9 9 11 11 13 • Median is the average of the 2 middle numbers! • 8 + 9 = 17 17/2 = 8.5 • After that, split data in half and include the numbers you used for the median to begin finding your Q! and Q3 • 2 4 4 7 8 9 9 11 11 13
What are the similarities and differences of EVEN vs. ODD amounts of numbers in the data set? • ODD: 2 3 3 4 4 6 8 8 9 10 15 • Circle the Median right away • To find the Q1 and Q3, do NOT include the median.
