COST WATCH WG2 meeting Torino, Italy 03 – 05 October 2007 Mobility characteristics of car park users in Vienna and its surrounding provinces University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences Vienna, Austria Klementschitz Roman Stark Juliane
Setting the scene • Trips of car-users using off-street car parks • Trip purpose: shopping – leisure – labour • Trip characteristics • Elasticity towards costs for parking
Purpose: Sample size Recorded trips per region and purpose
Purpose: Shopping • Characteristics of trips: • 88% are buying daily goods 12% longer lasting goods • Average trip-duration from origin to destination: 14 minutes inhabitants of the city 13 minutes inhabitants of the province • 6% were queuing for a free parking slot less than 1% more than 10 minutes
Purpose: Shopping Duration of stay at car park
Purpose: Shopping on-street parking measures included Without on-street parking measures:Deviation to on-street parking: 23 %
Purpose: Leisure • Characteristics of trips: • Average trip-duration from origin to destination: 22 minutes inhabitants of the city 29 minutes inhabitants of the province • 8% were queuing for a free parking slot less than 2% more than 10 minutes
Purpose: Leisure Distribution of destination type
Purpose: Leisure Duration of stay at car park
Purpose: Leisure Reasons of car use (trip purpose: leisure, off-street parking)
Purpose: Leisure Modal shift caused by different parking fees for a parking place (trip purpose: leisure) on-street parking measures included Without on-street parking measures:Deviation to on-street parking: 18 %
Purpose: Labour Reasons of car use (trip purpose: labour, off-street parking)
Purpose: Labour Modal shift caused by different parking fees for a parking place (trip purpose: labour) on-street parking measures included Without on-street parking measures:Deviation to on-street parking: 29 %
Purpose: Labour Job ticket (20% reduction of season ticket for pt): acceptance rate 44% Reasons of refuse
Purpose: Labour Comparison of elasticity: shopping vs. leisure vs. labour (1,80 € / h; 100 € / month) Trip cancelled Private car traffic Public transport Non motorized transport Others shopping leisure labour
Summary • High share of trips, where car drivers see no mandatory need to use car (17% shopping – 42% leisure), • Car park capacity is no restrictive element (6% – 8% did not find a vacant slot immediately) , • Deviation towards on street parking is an option for 18% – 29%, if inventing parking fees, • There is a clear potential of influencing mode choice if inventing obligatory parking fees on private car parks.
