The next element is FORM
Form • Three dimensional • Encloses space • Spheres, cylinders, cones, cubes, pyramids....
Form • 3 dimensional, has height, width and depth Form can suggest:• emotions• feelings• ideas.
Rectilinear Forms • the pattern created by lines running side by side (parallel) and intersecting with lines running at right angles (perpendicular) to the parallel lines • The most common used form in homes
Rectilinear Forms… • The reasons rectilinear forms are used so much are: • These forms fit together well, and conserve space. • These forms are easy to fit on drafting boards and easy to measure and build. • This form feels stable and secure, because it has 90 degree angles, solid. • This form establishes unity when repeated.
What is the danger of using this form too much? • this form could feel harsh and monotonous in a home or business • Example of rectilinear forms include: refrigerators, doors, windows, rugs, pillows, beds….what else can you think of?
Angular Forms • Shapes having one or more sharp angles • These include Triangles and pyramids and are found in most Rooflines • In modern homes they hold attention, and they also make things look larger. • They are the STRONGEST shape
What do diagonals do to room? • Add interest • Create a more lively feel • Gives the room more movement
Angular forms can appear sharp, energetic and even explosive.
Curved Forms • Combine continuity and change • They also bring to mind things found in nature like: flowers, trees, clouds
Three unique qualities circles and spheres have are: • They resist breakage-no corners, they are economical forms. • They remind a person of motion-wheels. • Provide unity-every point on the edge is equidistant from the middle.
Curved Lines… • Examples of curved lines include: Plates, bowls • We usually don’t find homes made of cylinder, sphere, or dome shapes
For next class… bring something with texture. Form assignment • Using the shape you drew, make the shape into a 3 dimensional form out of playdough or paper. • Or draw a sphere, column, or cube using lines and shadowing to show 3 dimensional form. • Color and make the form using the handout • In your notes, write a paragraph about how this assignment is an example of line, shape, and form.
