  2. Textiles & Lines • Textiles show lines in the weave of the fabric • More seen when the fabric is loosely woven

  3. Texture • The surface quality of an object or item • Tactile • How the object feels to the touch • Can feel the variation in the surface • Visual • An illusion - how the object appears to feel • Applied using line, color, & shading

  4. Real Texture • is the actual texture of an object

  5. Implied Texture • where something is made to look like a texture it isn’t

  6. The Effects of texture: • Visual/Tactile • Light • Informal/Formal • Size

  7. Visual/Tactile • Visual—the appearance of a surface • Tactile—the feel of a surface • Audible—the sound a surface makes when rubbed

  8. The effects of LIGHT • Light affects the appearance of texture by: • Shiny textures reflect more light and appear brighter • Rough textures reflect little light thus they appear darker

  9. Informal and Formal Texture • Rough, heavily textured walls are generally informal • Shiny, refined, smooth textures are characteristic of formal interiors

  10. Size: • Heavily textured walls will make a room appear smaller. • Walls with little to no texture will make a room appear larger.

  11. Textures affect us in many ways: • Everything we touch evokes a physical response (hard, soft, rough smooth, etc…) • Texture affects sound qualities • Texture affects the care and upkeep of an object • Texture is a source of beauty and character

  13. Texture - Smooth • Make colors appear lighter and brighter • Generally considered more formal

  14. Texture - Shiny • Reflective • Has more intense color

  15. Texture - Rough • Make color look darker and less intense • Generally less formal

  16. Texture Texture affects the care and upkeep of a product.

  17. Texture assignment • Use crayons or colored pencils to do a surface rub on 6 or more different textures on white paper. • On the bottom list the textures you used and the visual effect they gave.

  19. Pattern • Repetition of line, shape, form, texture and/or color • Reflects the mood of the elements used • Can be formal, informal, calm, playful..... • Sometimes considered a principle of design. • Size can make a room seem larger or smaller.
