The Pardoner’s Tale By:Brian Nowak & Anthony Scavone
Physical Characteristics • Has long, blonde hair (Line 695-697) • Bulging eyes (Line 704) • Wears a small hat (Line 703) • Smooth chin (Line 709-710) • Shows off his wallet pouch, inscribed with a cross (Line 700-701) • Has holy relics on his belt (Line 720-721) • Carries a huge cross-themed staff (Line 719)
Indirect Characterization He’s basically a con artist because he carries pig bones and sells them to people claiming they’re holy relics. At church, he would pull this stunt off to the entire congregation, and he was also the best at singing the collection song, we can assume its because he loves it so much
Social Class He’s set in the clergy class, right below the royalty & the noblemen. The clergy are supposed to take vows of poverty, but Chaucer’s Pardoner is as greedy as they come. He flaunts his wealth to everybody through his luxurious staff, gigantic wallet, and fine clothes.
His Deadly Sin • The pardoner’s deadly sin is his avarice, or greed. • He’ll do anything for money including scamming the good, churchgoing people that look up to him. • He says in his actual tale (not just the prologue) that his greed is the only thing that drives him to live.
