  2. The Harding Administration • Warren G Harding was elected in 1920. • Though he appointed some distinguished people to cabinet posts, he also gave a lot of positions to his friends • These people became known as The Ohio Gang

  3. The Harding Administration • Some member used their positions to sell government jobs or immunity from prosecution • Involved in many scandals • Amidst one scandal in July 1923, Harding died suddenly of illness

  4. Teapot Dome Scandal • Secretary of Interior, Alfred B. Fall allowed private companies to lease lands containing US Navy oil reserves at Teapot Dome, Wyoming (and Elk Hills, CA). • He received bribes from these companies • The Senate investigated, and secretary Fall was the 1st cabinet member to go to prison.

The Coolidge Administration • Calvin Coolidge restored integrity to the presidency • He distanced himself from the corruption from Harding’s Administration. • He only asked the most capable cabinet members to stay on • He believed that the government should interfere as little as possible with business.

  6. The Election of 1924 • The nation prospered under Coolidge, and he easily won the Republican nomination in 1924. • The Democratic party split, and even more voters formed their own party. • As a result, Coolidge won easily.
