4 Cueing Systems for Reading • Semantic– the meaning of the text - Does this make sense? Example: My dog Scruff likes to take a bath. • they replace take with have • the replacement doesn’t change the meaning of the sentence

4 Cueing Systems for Reading • Syntactic – the grammar of the text or how words are worded in sentences - Does this sound right? Example: Mum likes to go shop at the store. • The sentence should read – Mum likes to go shopping at the store. - For a child this may still sound right even though they have made an error.

4 Cueing Systems for Reading • Phonological/graphological – the sounds of the language in the text. - Do these sounds match the letters and do the words look right? Example: My dog Scruff likes to make new friends. - the child has replaced loves with likes. While not that important as it still makes sense you could ask whether the sounds made, match the letters.

4 Cueing Systems for Reading • Paralanguage cues – punctuation, capital letters, fonts and bold text - Does this look right to the meaning?
