  2. What is Energy? • Energy is the Ability to Do Work. • It is measured by the amount of work done, usually in joules or watts. Ntaba L. Cornwall

  3. Energy can be found in a number of different forms, these include but are not limited: • Chemical • Electrical • Heat (Thermal) • Light (Radiant) • Mechanical • Nuclear Energy can be transformed from one form to another. Ntaba L. Cornwall

  4. During the day, the sun gives out light and heat energy. Ntaba L. Cornwall

  5. A car is powered by gasoline, a type of stored energy (chemical). Ntaba L. Cornwall

  6. The food we eat contains stored energy; we use that energy to work and do all our activities. Ntaba L. Cornwall

  7. Heat Energy is used to cook our food. Ntaba L. Cornwall

  9. What is Energy Conservation? • It’s another way to say “saving energy” - “conserve” means to “avoid using.” When we turn off a light, we’re conserving energy. Ntaba L. Cornwall

  10. What is Energy Efficiency? • Energy efficiency also means using less energy, this term also means using products that don’t waste energy. Ntaba L. Cornwall

  11. What is Energy Efficiency? cont... • For example, an energy-efficient light bulb turns almost all of the electricity it uses into light. Ntaba L. Cornwall

  12. Why is it important to conserve energy? • Energy isn’t free. So wasting energy is the same as wasting money. Ntaba L. Cornwall

  15. Fossil Fuel • There are three major forms of fossil fuels: coal, oil and natural gas. • They were formed many hundreds of millions of years ago before the time of the dinosaurs. Ntaba L. Cornwall

  16. Fossil Fuel cont... • We are using up the fossil fuels so it's best to not waste them. • We can save fossil fuels by conserving energy. Ntaba L. Cornwall

  17. Coal • Coal is a hard, black coloured rock-like substance. It is made up of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen and varying amounts of sulphur. Ntaba L. Cornwall

  18. Petroleum • Petroleum means "rock oil" or "oil from earth". • Natural state - Crude Oil • thick like syrup or thin like water • contains natural gas Ntaba L. Cornwall

  19. Petroleum cont... • Colour of oil • black, golden, or dark green. Ntaba L. Cornwall

  20. Natural Gas • Natural gas is lighter than air. Natural gas is mostly made up of a gas called methane (CH4). Ntaba L. Cornwall

  21. Natural Gas cont... • This gas is highly flammable, it has no odour and you can't see it. It is usually found near petroleum underground. Ntaba L. Cornwall

  22. Renewable Energy • Renewable energy is made from resources that Mother Nature will replace, like wind, water and sunshine. Ntaba L. Cornwall

  23. Renewable Energy cont... • It is also called “clean energy” or “green power” because it doesn’t pollute the air or the water. Ntaba L. Cornwall

  24. Energy and Recycling • Recycling helps save energy – 30% less energy • That's because they don't have to process the raw materials from scratch. Ntaba L. Cornwall

  29. DO shut off the lights when you’re done using them, and turn off the TV, computer, video games and other electrical stuff when you leave the room. Ntaba L. Cornwall

  30. DON'T leave the refrigerator door open. Every time you open the door, up to one-third of the cold air can escape. Ntaba L. Cornwall

  31. DO replace a burnt-out light bulb with a new compact fluorescent bulb. Fluorescent bulbs use 75 percent less energy, and they last 10 times longer. Ntaba L. Cornwall

  32. Water Conservation is Energy Conservation! Don’t waste water, it takes electricity to pump it. Ntaba L. Cornwall

  33. DO turn off dripping faucets. One drop per second can add up to 165 gallons of water a month - that's more than one person uses in two weeks! Ntaba L. Cornwall

  34. Another good way to conserve is to take a shorter shower. Ntaba L. Cornwall

  35. Purchase an energy efficient microwave which has a power output of 600-700W. Ntaba L. Cornwall

  36. Use a Power Strip! Plug home electronics into a single power strip with an ON/OFF switch. Ntaba L. Cornwall

  37. Use the cell phone less because you have to charge it. Ntaba L. Cornwall

  38. Turn off entertainment devices when not in use (TV, games, etc.) Ntaba L. Cornwall

  39. Carpool or take public transportation. Ntaba L. Cornwall

  40. Use the fan only when necessary, and disconnect it when not in use. Ntaba L. Cornwall

  41. Nominate an Energy monitor for your class, he/she will be responsible for reminding the student to practise energy saving tips. Ntaba L. Cornwall

  44. Conclusions • We must conserve energy and use it efficiently to make sure we have plenty of energy resources in the future. Ntaba L. Cornwall

  45. Conclusions cont... • All energy sources have an impact on the environment. Concerns about the greenhouse effect and global warming, air pollution, and energy security have led to increasing interest and more development in renewable energy. Ntaba L. Cornwall

  46. Recommendation • Consider starting an “Energy Club” or “Energy Patrol” at your school.  At the meetings, you can discuss ways that your school can conserve energy.  You could also check on the progress of the whole school in terms of saving energy. Ntaba L. Cornwall
