A Disciple Serves Up sacrificially Romans 12:1-8
Romans 12:1-8 • “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. 4 For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, 5 so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. 6 We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your[a] faith; 7 if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; 8 if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead,[b] do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.”
A Disciple Offers Themselves Sacrificially • Romans 12:1-2 “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” • Interesting that Paul says “in view of God’s mercy” • Why not “in view of God’s grace”
A Living Sacrifice • 3 Ways to Fully Express our Surrender • Offer your Body • offer means “present once and for all” • God is looking for total surrender, total devotion
A Living Sacrifice • Offer your Mind • Urge is to stop conforming to the world • You are a new creation!
A Living Sacrifice • Offer your Will • “then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is, His good, pleasing, and perfect will.” • God allows us to choose His will • We need to check our undercarriage from time to time
When checking your Undercarriage • …Do so with a proper understanding of self • Vs 3 “For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you.” • Be humble!
A Disciple Takes Their Place in the Body vs4-5 “For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, 5 so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.” • Our lives do have meaning and purpose! • Everyone here is a pastor/ minister
A Disciple Takes Their Place in the Body • Ravi Zacharias has said “We are all priests before God, there is no such distinction as 'secular or sacred.' In fact, the opposite of sacred is not secular; the opposite of sacred is profane. In short, no follower of Christ does secular work. We all have a sacred calling.” • Watchman Nee said “I do not consecrate myself to be a missionary or a preacher. I consecrate myself to God to do His will where I am, be it in school, office, or kitchen, or wherever He may, in His wisdom, send me.”
Yet we are woven together… • There is great diversity, yet there is ONE SPIRIT! • One Higher Purpose
A Church is a Great Orchestra • Be Sure and Play your instrument • Don’t refuse to Play
A Disciple Uses Gifts Graciously • Vs6-8 “We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us.
