Marie Gentry (Interior Design), ChairJim Gigantino (History), Vice Chair University Calendar Committee Proposal
Purpose and Background • Both students and faculty are finding the current ten minute interval between classes to be inadequate due to a number of factors including: • Continued growth on campus both in enrollment and facilities • Development of facilities away from the center of campus • Centralized scheduling system that spreads room assignments across campus
Committee Charge • The University Calendar Committee reviewed the current class schedule and voted to recommend an additional five minutes be added to the interval between classes • The Committee studied three different proposals submitted by the Registrar’s Office • Each proposal: • Modified the start times for MWF courses • Decreased TR contact time to 150 minutes • Provides equity between MWF and TR contact hours (each now at 150 minutes) and leaves the TR start times unchanged
Highlights of Recommended Proposal • 15 minute interval between classes • MWF class start times adjusted for the new interval---start times will vary • TR class contact hours now equivalent to MWF class contact hours (all at 150 minutes) • New TR one credit hour course start times
Proposed New MW and TR Course Times • Altered MW afternoon course times (currently start at 3:30 and 4:30PM) • Standardized MW and TR night course times. • Currently all courses after 5PM are exempt from standardized time blocks • Recommend standardizing night courses to: • Meet demands of enrollment growth • Enable non-traditional students to take a full load (12 hours) after 6PM • Flexibility still exists for courses that meet one night a week (exempt from standardized times) • Studied the possibility of an early morning MW time block at 8:00AM but could not recommend due to classroom space conflicts • Possibility of adding a MW 7:00-8:15AM course time if interest exists
Implementation • Recommend implementation of new course times in Fall 2013
