Warm Up: February 27th • What causes surface currents? • A. Earth’s spin • B. wind caused by uneven heating of the surface • C. near-shore wave energy • D. underwater earthquakes • Explain why this causes these types of currents. • HOMEWORK: Complete Waves handout (Front and back)
Chapter 14 section 3 S6E3d ~ Explain the causes of waves, currents and tides.
1. Explain how energy plays a role in the creation of waves. 2. Explain how water moves as waves travel through it? 3. How do deep-water waves become shallow water waves? 4. Explain the difference between the breaker zone and the surf.
5. Explain why waves break as they reach the shore. 6. How does the formation of an undertow differ from the formation of a longshore current? How is sand on the beach affected by each? 7. Where and when do whitecaps form?
8. Where is a storm surge located in relation to the storm? 9. Why do a majority of tsunamis occur in the Pacific Ocean? 10. Why are tsunamis dangerous?
Answers: 1. Energy is transferred to the water as winds blows across the water’s surface. 2. Water at and near the surfaces rises and falls in circular movements as waves move through it. 3. When they reach water that is shallower than one-half their wavelength. 4. At the breaker zone, the waves first begin to tumble downward and the surf is between the breaker zone and shore, water moves toward the shore
5. As deep-water waves become shallow-water waves, the water particles slow down and build up. This change forces more water between wave crests, which increases wave height. 6. Undertows forms when waves crash on the beach head-on. (carries sand away from shoreline) Longshore current forms when waves hit the shore at an angle. (carries sand along shoreline)
Whitecaps form in the open ocean usually during a storm. 8. Storm surge occurs under a storm. 9. There are a lot of earthquakes in and around the Pacific Ocean. 10. They can cause severe flooding and can destroy communities with its powerful wave.
