This project aims to refine and adapt a standard protocol for assessing and monitoring the status of sensitive nearshore habitats that have been heavily impacted by development and recreation. The objective is to research and develop a protocol specifically for lakes statewide, using sentinel lakes as testing grounds. The proposal includes adding a temporary research position to focus on this question and working with the Eco Sensitive Lakeshore team to develop a conceptual regional framework and adaptations. The approach includes prioritizing components for more rapid assessment, focusing on process-oriented features and availability of GIS layers, such as flow networks. One of many possibilities for improvement is giving greater weight to areas of inflow.

Sensitive Lakeshore Assessment Refinement and adaptation of protocol
Nearshore areas have been impacted greatly by development and recreation Standard, state-wide protocol to assess and monitor the status of these habitats is needed Objective: research and further develop Cass Co. nearshore assessment protocol for lakes statewide – use sentinel lakes as testing grounds Justification and objectives
Propose to add temporary LCCMR research position to focus specifically on this question. Work with Eco Sensitive Lakeshore team to develop conceptual regional framework and adaptations Sensitive habitats are different in Cook Co. (NE) than in Lincoln Co. (SW) Prioritize components for more rapid assessment ID process oriented features and availability of GIS layers – example flow networks Approach
