What is the Internet? • Is the Invention of the Internet one of the greatest creation of mankind? • Internet play a very important role in the field of computing today. • The internet is a global system that is used to connect billion of devices together. • “The internet has revolutionized the computer and communication world like nothing before”1 • The inspiration of many new creations we have today.

  3. Who invented the Internet?2 • The internet was not invented by a single person, or a small group. • J.C.R. Licklider of MIT – first recorded usage of internet. • ARPANET – an agency that was funded by the U.S. Department of Defense – first successful prototype of the internet. • Robert Kahn and Vinton Cerf – TCP/IP in the 1970s. • TCP/IP inspired many scientists, researchers and programmers to develop the modern internet.

Usage2 • The internet allowed billions of devices all over the world to connect, and communicate to one another. • TCP/IP – Transmission Control Protocol/ Internet Protocol • Basic communication language or protocol of the internet. • A model that set rules for how data could be transmitted between network. • Send files and data from one computer to another. • The internet allowed us to obtain many information from our computers.

  5. Tim Berners-Lee3 • English computer scientist • Tim Berners-Lee invented the first web browser with the name “World Wide Web” in 1990. • The internet we know today.4 • Interlinked hypertext documents that are accessed via the internet. • Example: www.google.com

  6. Communication • E-mail : Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, AOL, etc… • Free and instant. • E-mail are much more convenient and faster than regular mails. • Messengers: Instant chat on computers, phones, and tablets for free. • Video Chat: Skype, Oovoo. • Online Chat room.

  7. E-commerce • The Internet led to the development of E-commerce. • Many companies started to advertise and sell their products online using the internet. Online retailing. • Amazon5: World largest internet company. • Founded on July 5, 1994 by Jeff Bezos. • Revenue: $ 74.4 billion in 2013. • 132,600 employees. • eBay6: Compete with Amazon. Revenue: $ 16.05 billion in 2013, 33500 employees.

  8. Social Networking7 • Myspace: Pioneer in social networking, started in 2003. Could not compete with Facebook and others. ~35 million registered users. • Google+: ~ 1.6 Billion registered users, General. • Facebook: ~ 1.28 Billion registered users, Photos, Videos, Blogs, Apps • Twitter: ~ 645 Million registered users, Micro-blogging, RSS, and updates. • LinkedIn: ~ 200 Million registered users, Business and Professional networking. • Instagram: ~ 150 Million registered user, Video and Photo sharing.

  9. Downside • Big distraction • Teenagers, and young adults spent too much time on social networking, games, movies, etc. • Careless with personal information • Identity Theft • Virus – dangerous websites and files 8

Protections9 • Anti-Virus Protection – Scan computer for viruses, immediately detects malware from harming your PC. • Safe Browsing, Web protection – Inspects network activity from the web, eliminating online threats before they reach your PC. • Firewall – Blocks unauthorized access to or from private network. • Email Protection – Scan and detects threats from content and attachment of incoming emails. • Networking Protection – Block hackers from entering your system to steal important information.

  11. Life Before the Internet10 • Do you remember life before the internet? • Did we become so lazy because of the technologies we have today? • Online shopping, books, movies. • Communicating with others using computers. • No more maps? No more newspaper?
