II. ESTABLISH YOUR SPECIFIC PURPOSE • Create a carefully worded goal expressed in terms of the desired audience effect • This is the thesis of the speech
III. RESEARCH YOUR TOPIC AND AUDIENCE • Library research • Internet research • Personal experience • Interviews of experts Create a citation page of all citations used. You will turn this in with an outline, you must credit sources in the speech itself.
IV. CONSTRUCT YOUR OUTLINE • Introduction: gains the attention of the audience and previews the main points • Body: Presents main points in a coherent sequence and amplifies those main points 1. Organizational styles: chronological. spatial, topical, cause-effect, problem-solution 2. Forms of support: definitions, examples, narratives, testimony, statistics, visual aides • Conclusion: summarizes the main points and provides a positive finish for the speech
Introduction Ideas • Refer to the occasion and purpose of the speech • Pay the audience a genuine compliment • Tell a story(human interest, humorous, exciting, etc.) • Refer to a recent incident • Use a quotation • Use a novel idea or striking statement • Refer to a preceding speaker • Ask a pertinent or challenging question(**rhetorical**) • A combination of above
Conclusion Ideas • Summary or recapitulation of main points • Use a striking anecdote,, analogy or simile • Give a powerful, emotionalized or idealized statement of the thesis • Use a vivid illustration of the central idea • Give a call to action or a challenge to the audience (required in persuasion)
V. REHEARSE YOUR SPEECH • Word choices should be clear and vivid • Pronunciations should accurate • Voice should be clear and articulated • Use poise and gestures • Delivery should be direct, lively and conversational
