5 KNOWLEDGE OFACCIDENTS • Type of vehicles • Thevehiclesinvolved. 72.5% of thevehiclesinvolved in accidents are private cars, 14.6% are heavy goodsvehicles, 8.5% are vans and therest are motorbikes. • Environmental and roadcharacteristics • 86% of accidents are on a clean, drysurface; in 13% of the cases thesurfaceiswet and in therestthesurface has ice orsnow (1% of allaccidents). • Light conditions, thehighestaccidentrateisrecordedduringthedaytime (70% of allaccidents), themostseriousaccidentsoccur at night, particularlywhenthereis no orverylittle light. • Distribution in time • Distributionbymonths: thereisanupwardtrend in theaccidentrateduringthesummermonths. Regardingthedays of theweek, thedistribution of accidentsis quite similar, althoughtheweekends do stand out. • Distributionby time, mainlyfirstthing in themorning and in theafternoon. At night, thepercentage of deathsisdouble.
