  1. SCILET (STUDY CENTRE FOR INDIAN LITERATURE IN ENGLISH AND TRANSLATION), The American College, Madurai, Tamilnadu, India URL: www.scilet.in E-Mail: scilet@gmail.com SCILET’s Initiative in Preservation, Digitization and Dissemination of its Resources Online

  2. SCILET, an acronym for Study Centre for Indian Literature in English and Translation, was started in the year 1985, with the seed money provided by the United Board. • The present Digitization initiative is also funded by the United Board under its Digital Alliance Pilot Project. • SCILET holds a good collection of books by Indian writers including expatriates who have written in English. The library also has books translated from the regional languages. Both primary and secondary sources are available.

  3. SCILET will provide accessibility to its resources by the digitization process. • The library holds more than 10,387 volumes on Indian literature. • Back issues of nearly 225 journals are available. • 70 journals are currently subscribed. • The SCILET library database (CDS ISIS based) has a current record of 70,709.

  4. The present digitization initiative will result in the resources to be uploaded in the SCILET’s website. • SCILET has already embarked on a project to digitize its Journal holdings with the help of Greenstone Digital Library Software. • SCILET’s poetry journal, Kavya Bharati, will be hosted online. • Kavithalaya, a journal of Indian student writings, will also be hosted online.

  5. Writers like Shashi Deshpande, Adil Jussawalla, Kamala Das, et al. have provided the library with their own manuscripts which will be made available to researchers. • SCILET has a good collection of lectures and readings by various writers who have been featured in our “meet the author” program. Audio files as well as transcripts of these readings and lectures will be uploaded for the benefit of researchers.

  6. Similarly, seminar and conference papers will be made available to researchers online. • Photographs of more than thirty visiting writers and their programs will be provided online with facility of adding many more authors as they visit.

  7. The outcome of the project will result in SCILET reaching the global researchers by the following methods: • SCILET to host its Bibliographical database online. • Registration of online membership, and request to be incorporated in the website. • Customized paid e-mail facility to be given to Librarian, Director and Editor for easy on-line communication.

  8. SCILET uses CDS ISIS provided by UNESCO free of cost for its library database. This database will be hosted online. • Greenstone Digital Library Software, which is used for SCILET library’s digitizing initiative linking all the scanned materials, will be hosted online. • An Interactive module is to be developed on the website. • Payment of Fees to be made online. • A Discussion Forum (for members and non-members) will be provided.
