Fed Challenge • College Fed Challenge is an academic competition. • Teams of students research and analyze economic conditions and then present their analysis with a recommendation for monetary policy • Annual competition at the national level • MSU sends a team to the Chicago Fed (November 21st this year)
Fed Challenge Format 1) 15 minute presentation • Current economic conditions • Monetary policy recommendation 2) 15 minute Q & A session • Presentation related • In general on monetary policy
Scoring • Knowledge of monetary policy and of the Federal Reserve’s role in its implementation • Responses to judges’ questions • Quality of the presentation • Quality of the research and analysis; and • Evidence of teamwork and cooperation.
Team’s role • Gathering research about all aspects of monetary policy • Thinking critically of economic theories and how they apply to policy decisions • Preparing charts and other data related figures • Judging practice sessions • Brainstorming about policy recommendation
Benefit to Students • Learn more about the US economy, the financial systemand the Federal Reserve System • Hone skills of public speaking, logical thinking • Apply their experience to acquire internships, discover potential career paths
Benefit to Students • Credit for EC 490 • 2 credits for fall • 1 credit for spring
Evaluation for EC 490 • Quality of student’s presentations • Quality of student’s participation and preparation
Workload for EC 490 Spring • Meet every other week, occasionally more often Fall • Meet every week • More often leading up to presentation in November • No work from late November till end of fall semester!
Proposed dates for Fall 2016 Meetings: Mondays 7pm, Room: TBA (Berkey, most likely) • September 12th , 19th, 26th • October 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th , 31st • November 7th, 14th

Plan for Sep 12th meeting Presentation on the labor market with focus on following topics • Labor Force Participation Rate: • Natural rate of unemployment • Different measures of labor market health • Wages and Beveridge Curve Emphasis on implications for monetary policy
A guide for first-time presenters • Work in teams • Start with resources on Fed Challenge website • Look at old presentations (Dropbox folder) • Research any new recent developments on your topic • Choose which graphs to present • Update graphs with most recent data • Most importantly remember to tell a story with each graph!
