THAT Career is Popular? • The labor market changes with current trends and needs in today’s world • Careers that were popular ten years ago may be less desirable, or completely extinct now. • For example, a career as a computer software engineer was only emerging ten years ago. However, careers with the post office are diminishing. • Think-Pair-Share: • Why?????
THAT Career is Popular? • Many people choose to have many careers in their lifetime. Others choose to stay “career loyal” and retire within the career they began in. • What are the pros and cons of each?

Nontraditional Careers and Workplace Issues • When you begin a career, you will learn that there are many issues that can arise in a workplace. • Some issues will be minor, while some will be major. • Major workplace issues: • Discrimination: the unfair treatment of a person or group based on age, gender, race or religion • Sexual harassment: Unwanted, repeated behavior or communication that bothers, annoys, frightens, or stresses another person. • Harassment can take on many forms. It is more than just repeatedly asking someone on a date, it can be constantly criticizing someone and being overly critical
Nontraditional Careers and Workplace Issues • Both discrimination and sexual harassment are illegal and should not be tolerated. • The Civil Rights Act of 1964 prevents an employer from using race, skin color, religion, gender, or national origin as a reason to promote, demote, hire or fire • The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) prevents an employer from discriminating based on age or physical disability
Nontraditional Careers and Workplace Issues • Nontraditional careers are characterized by jobs that a man or woman does that is usually done by the opposite gender • The U.S. Department of Labor defines nontraditional occupations as occupations in which men or women comprise 25% or less of its total employment. • What are some examples? • Why do you think these careers were stereotyped as a “man’s job” or “woman’s work”?

The Importance of Technological Skills • Technology has become an extremely important part of today’s world • Could you live one day without using anything that relies on technology? • Your area of skill will have a strong influence on who is apt to hire you, as well as what level you will be hired into. • Technology has created new jobs, and diminished others • Can you name an example of each?
